I want to put vintage tuners on an American Fender Strat?
does anyone know if vintage tuners (1960's style tuners) will fit on a new 2008 American Strat? or will I need to do some drilling and add a string tree? Also if anyone one has ever tried this than let me know how you like it. Thanks
I've never tried that before, but off the top of my head, I would think that it would probably not be too much trouble. I haven't looked at the new tuners on a Strat in a while. I bought a brand new American Deluxe in 1979 and played it for over 20 years, so I didn't need to look.
But the headstock on that guitar was the newer style bigger headstock.
Today's Strats have the old vintage style headstock. But since the necks and nuts are probably just about the same, I'd guess that the string spacing and distance from the bridge is probably the same, too.
I suspect they'd pop right in.
I liked the older style tuners, with the hole in the top, it made replacing strings a snap. And it eliminated the funky string ends dangling out of the tuner. (although those were good for sticking a lit cigarette on while playing)
I do notice that the new Fenders only have the one String tree. I believe mine had two.

You can see the two trees.
But since yours only has one, it probably won't need another. Although it's probably not hard to add one if you need to.
I have changed in line tuners before on a 12 string acoustic before.
I found an old 12 string in a friend's garage. It was all messed up, so he said I could have it. It was missing a few tuners in the set, so I went and bought a generic 12 string tuner set and it popped right in.
I think because of intonation and scaling that the tuner holes' locations are pretty much set in stone.
I don't see why your guitar would be any different.
