Tension Rods

What is the architectural name of the connecting rods that were used on turn of the century contstruction?

The rods to which I refer function as bolts which were originally installed between levels of the structure to prevent the exterior walls from spreading with time as the forces of gravity pulled the upper floors and roof down. These are commonly found in homes100 years or more of age and were especially prevalent in brick structures. The rod ends have functional and frequently decorative endplates which are visible on the exterior walls. The endplates were made on the form of stars, crescents, z s, circles and squares. Also, I appreciate it if anyone knows what the proper name is of the endplates. The only thing I have ever heard the called is tension rods and I can't find that in any construction or architectural dictonary.

I've heard them called truss rods and tie rods they are actually tension rods but I don't believe that is an architectural term. You are right they were put in homes to prevent the walls from spreading but in both "balloon framed" homes and brick homes. They were also installed in many homes during the construction phase as a preventive measure. Look in residential areas of older cities like Boston, New York, Cincinnati, St Louis,etc. You will find them in many Federal style homes with the decorative "star" end plates. I'm sure there is an "old timey" name for the rods and plates but I don't know what it is. You would probably have to find a contractor that was about 100 to get the answer to that question. If he remembers.
