What are good drum sizes for rock drumming?
I am a drum beginner. And I want to know what are the ideal sizes for the toms, snares, and the bass drum used to play rock music(hard rock, metal, etc.)
Actually the larger the drum the easier it is to tune and make sound good, especially in the hands of a beginner. There is a limit though. Many of the entry level kits come with a 10" and 12" tom. This is way too small for hard rock/metal. You definitely want a 22" kick drum, anything larger or smaller does sound good. I've played everything from an 18" to a 24" and the 22" is the ticket. For toms just go with a basic 12" and 13" mounted tom and a 16" floor tom. Snare becomes more of a preference. Some metal drummers will go with the deep 8" snare which I did play for a few years, but I just never could get the right sound without adding tons of reverb. Seriously a 61/2" snare is the best all around size and then you just choose metal if you want a brighter sound or wood if you want a warmer sound. Good luck with your drumming and keep at it.
