What is the difference between Maple, Birch, Mahogany, Acrylic, Stave, and Hybrid for drum shells?
I've been drumming for about 7 years, and I finally want to order from a custom drum company, except what are the differences between these woods and plys for the drum shells?
Good question. Very good question actually since most drummers look at how cool the wrap or stain is on a set and don't really care too much about what it's made of.
-Maple - the Gold standard. Warm and dark sounding. Deeper in pitch. Good resonance.
Birch - Louder and brighter, higher pitches are noticeable. Punchier with more bark.
Acrylic - Louder than Maple, very punchy and almost 'synthetic' sounding. Also most acrylic shells are see through so you have that effect.
Stave - Most shells are plywood, Stave shells are built with small, straight planks of wood that are glued in a circle and then sanded/filed to a circular design on a lathe. Kind of like how barrels are made. Sound is brighter due to thicker shell, louder and much better resonance because of less glue than ply shells. Very expensive to do a whole kit with. Hybrid - It's a wood shell that's split and a small acrylic shell is inserted in between the two maple. If you google Hybrid Drum, you'll get a lot of good pictures. Some people claim that you get a mix of the wood and acrylic properties, but I believe that whatever you use in the middle doesn't matter, as the bearing edges are only going to be on one material. i.e. if you had a Maple-acrylic-Maple hybrid, the drum for the most part will sound Maple. Hybrid is mostly for looks.
Custom Drum Companies.
Truth and SJC are excellent companies. C&C is great, however you'll be paying a bit more. Dark Horse Percussion is a really good company right now that offers good prices on their sets. Spaun does excellent custom graphics.
